IMMERSIVE ENGLISH DRAMA LEARNING BASED ON THE CONCEPTS AND STRATEGIES OF POA (PRODUCTION-ORIENTED APPROACH) IN A MAINLAND CHINA UNIVERSITY
Q. Xie
In 2015,Professor Wen Qiufang (from Beijing Foreign Studies University) brought out the concept of POA (Production-Oriented Approach) based on her own "output-driven, input-enabled hypothesis", in order to solve typical English learning problems among university students in Mainland China.
POA tries to integrate the strengths of Western instructional approaches with Chinese contextual features and consists of three components:
1) teaching principles (which include "learning-centered", "learning-using integration", and "whole-person education");
2) teaching hypotheses ("output-driven", "input-enabled", & "selective learning"); and
3) teacher-mediated teaching processes ("motivating", "enabling", & "assessing").
This paper introduces the basic concepts and strategies of POA; makes a literature review on its application form, theoretical system, teaching procedures and effectiveness; and then discusses its practices and results in an Immersive English Drama course for non-English-major students in a mainland China university.
Keywords: Production-Oriented Approach, Immersive English drama learning, motivating, enabling, assessing.
