LEARNING TO CARE FOR THE ROAD WAY: TRAFFIC EDUCATION FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN
A.K. Ventura
We currently live in a society filled with bad habits that are instilled in us from a young age, many of which affect our road safety education. Likewise, road safety education is key for children at a young age to learn to respect and recognize traffic signs, fostering safe habits when traveling. From an early age, it is essential that they understand the importance of following traffic rules and encourage their families to respect them.
The objective of this work is to encourage children to be promoters of road safety by developing awareness through playful and didactic activities for learning in a fun and effective way at the "Benemérito de las Américas Campus Ojo de Agua" Elementary School in the State of Mexico.
The methodology consisted of three phases. The first was the diagnosis and planning phase, in which we identified the needs and difficulties in the lack of understanding of traffic rules, designing didactic activities adapted to the age and comprehension of the children based on these observations. The second phase consisted of implementation and execution, in which a workshop was first developed where students learned about traffic signs and traffic control devices, and then moved on to a circuit where they simulated and put into practice the knowledge they learned in the workshop. The third phase consisted of evaluation and follow-up, where feedback activities were applied, and we encouraged teachers and parents to evaluate the impact of this work on their children.
Following the implementation of the project at the Benemérito de las Américas Campus Ojo de Agua Elementary School, the following results were obtained: appropriate signs were modified within the school and it was observed that the children recognized and respected them. Parents and family members reported that the children corrected them when they did not follow traffic rules, such as using seat belts or respecting traffic lights. The initiative succeeded in sensitizing the children about the importance of road safety and motivating them to be promoters of good practices, generating a positive impact on their school and family environment.
