The role and place of various digital competences are becoming increasingly relevant in our personal and professional lives. The needs of information users to receive reliable, relevant, high-quality information are constantly growing. This situation and those needs determine the requirements for new competences, where a very important place is given not only to different information and communication technologies, various digital tools and platforms, etc., but also to information management competences that are not traditionally directly related to information and digital technologies. One of the most important places in the development of digital competencies, according to Dig Comp v2.2, is occupied by information and data literacy, especially such skills as information management skills as well as browsing, searching, filtering and management of data, information and digital content. Based on the analysis of student opinions, the need and opportunities for the development of such skills will be presented. Our research has shown that using online courses in the Moodle system, students develop their competencies more easily and appropriately. Such distance learning environments are suitable for those students who have limited opportunities to physically attend classes or have certain learning disabilities, as well as for those who need more time for studies due to gaps in knowledge or skills. It should be noted that the relevant development of a course for the development of transversal digital competencies was one of the activities under the international project “FTDCHE: Transversal Digital Competences in Higher Education”. Five European higher education institutions from Spain, Belgium, Slovenia, Romania and Lithuania participated in the project.
