Social media is an integral part of daily life in today's society, with a greater impact among young people, who generally spend an excessive amount of time on these platforms. Among all social networks, Instagram is one of the most preferred within this segment of society. Based on this premise, this project proposes the use of Instagram as an educational tool that places students at the centre of the learning process, enabling them to generate their own knowledge in a specific field while also developing transversal skills such as communication and science dissemination. Therefore, the aim is to transform the use of social media into an educational tool related to the field of Food Science and aligned with key Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger, Quality Education and Responsible Consumption and Production. Given students' familiarity with these social networks, the project has been well received and successfully achieved its proposed objectives. This approach could be extrapolated to other subjects in related fields of knowledge.
The project members are four professors and one postgraduate student from the Departmental Section of Food Science, Faculty of Science, Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain. The recipients' target groups were undergrad students from the Degrees of Food Science and Technology, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and the Double Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics-Food Science and Technology and postgraduate students from the Master in Novel Foods.
Students who voluntarily participate in the project have designed infographics to expand the modules´ concepts. After the project team's first feedback, students submitted a maximum of 11 infographics to explain the topic of interest. The content was then published on a dedicated Instagram account managed by the project team (infoalimentos_uam). Finally, students completed an opinion survey to assess their participation. The survey responses have shown that the project contributed to learning new concepts, consolidating existing ones, and developing an innovative and attractive learning methodology. Most of the students positively valued being the center of their learning process and have improved their communication skills. Moreover, students rated positively the integration of teaching innovation activities, such as creating infographics on Instagram, into modules.
