In recent years, the construction industry has undergone significant transformation due to emerging technologies that have prompted the adoption of Industry 4.0 tools, particularly those assisted by artificial intelligence (AI). The professional sector has embraced AI tools, arguing that they enhance efficiency and save time in specific design and construction workflow processes. In contrast, the academic sector has been slower in adapting and incorporating these tools, with many institutions relying mainly on traditional teaching methods in architecture and civil engineering programs. It has created a gap in the skills that graduates possess, which can hinder their career readiness and competition in the job market.

This study examined the current demand for knowledge and proficiency in IA and other Industry 4.0 tools among professionals in the construction sector. The objective is to identify the key competencies required in an environment characterized by constant transformation. A qualitative methodology, which includes structured interviews and surveys, was used to collect data from a focal group. This group comprised practicing professionals from architectural and civil engineering backgrounds involved in building design and construction. The data collected was analysed to assess the current state of technological adoption and the challenges companies face in finding professionals with the required skills and knowledge. The results will also help to define criteria to guide the process to integrate these technologies appropriately into teaching and learning processes.
