INCLUSIVE EFL TEACHING IN GREECE: CHALLENGES, STRATEGIES, AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
M. Karatsiori1, T. Liontou2
This study, conducted as part of the SPLENDID (Students with DIverse Learning NeeDs) project, investigates the practices and training needs of Greek educators teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to learners with Diverse Learning Needs (DLNs) in mainstream schools. Teaching foreign languages to students with DLNs, including those with visual, hearing, physical/mobility impairments, and learning disabilities, presents distinct challenges for both students and educators. Many teachers struggle to enhance learning, academic performance, and overall well-being due to insufficient training and expertise in this area.
To address these challenges, the survey focused on four key areas:
1. Demographic and Professional Background – Information on Greek teachers' gender, age, years of experience, and educational qualifications.
2. Inclusive Teaching Experience and Practices – Educators' prior engagement with students with DLNs and their familiarity with inclusive teaching methods.
3. Teaching Adaptations and Strategies – The specific instructional modifications applied in classrooms, such as assistive technology and differentiated instruction.
4. Teacher Confidence and Training Needs – Self-reported confidence levels in inclusive teaching and areas where professional development is required.
The survey collected responses from 231 Greek EFL teachers, exploring their backgrounds, experiences, teaching adaptations, and perceived training needs. Findings indicate varying levels of confidence among Greek teachers in implementing inclusive practices, emphasizing specific areas where further professional development is needed.
The results contribute to ongoing discussions on teacher education in Greece, inclusion strategies, and the design of targeted training programs to support Greek EFL teachers in diverse classrooms. Furthermore, the study provides practical recommendations for Greek EFL teachers on integrating effective teaching strategies and digital tools to enhance individualized learning experiences.
