Current labour market requirements and the development of civil society emphasize the need to educate students of all ages with numerous competencies so that they are prepared for the future. The Institute of Lifelong Learning (UCV) of the University of Žilina in Žilina focuses on the development of students' language competencies within individual study programs and at the same time follows specific priorities for adults in the target group 45+. The contribution focuses on identifying missing topics in terms of current and future needs of society in developing participants' competencies, formulating strategic goals, and activating forms for a given target group. The basic framework consists of the legislative regulating the activities of universities of the third age, selected initiatives and projects of the university, and the National Program for Active Ageing for 2021-2030 in the Slovak Republic. The starting point was the analysis of educational courses for the target group 45+, the analysis of individual topics and the scope of the given area within the courses, the comparison of accreditation standards for lifelong learning from an academic and practical point of view as well as the interest of the course participants.
Throughout the monitored period, the activities of U3V focused predominantly on the support of language, digital, financial, and media literacy, which develop and complement the competencies, knowledge and skills for applying or maintaining themselves in the labour market. The research results point to the need to focus not only on digital skills, but also on the growing requirements for green skills for the double transformation in increasing the competitiveness of the economy and a healthy lifestyle. Green skills represent a shift towards more environmentally sustainable procedures, processes and products. In addition, the double transformation leads to a more sustainable and technologically advanced future. At the same time, specific goals were identified for the 60+ target group, which include courses, topics and activities that contribute to improving the quality of life by increasing the level of civilization literacy of individuals, developing competencies with an emphasis on identifying and applying their connection to the community and strengthening the social and cultural potential of the individual.
