AUTOMATED UNIVERSITY TIMETABLING: A PYTHON-BASED APPROACH FOR EFFICIENT SCHEDULE MANAGEMENT
H. Sharafuddin
Arab Open University (KUWAIT)
Constructing a timetable is a complex task for faculty, requiring manual preparation for each semester and adherence to the university's predefined subject schemes. Additionally, faculty workloads significantly influence their availability for teaching assignments. Efficient timetabling is crucial as it impacts resource utilization and cost savings for the institution. This paper presents recent advancements in timetabling solutions at the Arab Open University - Kuwait, which can be adapted to various scheduling challenges.

The paper is organized into three sections: a review of recent timetabling applications at other universities, an exploration of a multicriteria decision-making approach, and innovative techniques using Python and AI. Our proposed system automates the creation of timetables by considering semester-specific subjects, available rooms, and faculty workloads, ensuring seamless integration with the existing SIS database.

This automated timetabling system is proposed to enhance the operational efficiency, resource management, and economic benefits. By addressing the limitations of manual timetabling, the system facilitates the creation of dynamic, efficient, and cost-effective schedules for numerous courses and semesters. This advancement not only improves educational management but also supports the infrastructure necessary for smart universities.
