DEVELOPMENT OF TEAMWORK SKILLS IN EVENT PLANNING THROUGH BUSINESS PROCESS MODELLING IN A MASTER'S DEGREE IN ENGINEERING
M.J. Verdecho, E. Suarez Ruz
This paper presents a practical experience in which an event is planned and modeled using business process modeling notation (BPMN) by students working in groups. BPMN is a widely used modeling language that allows representing processes using standardized elements. The course belongs to a master’s degree in engineering, and it is taught at a Spanish technical university. The objective of the experience is to use the event planning structure and its modeling as a basis for fostering teamwork by defining objectives and goals to be achieved by the team as well as improving teamwork collaboration and communication. Prior to the practical session, students were divided into groups and attended classroom sessions in which they were introduced to the concepts of modeling in BPMN and the Bizagi Modeler software. In addition, the teamwork competency and team roles to be adopted in the activity were explained. The practical session lasts three hours and it is as follows. First, each team defines the work to be performed and establishes team objectives and goals. Second, the group discusses how to model in BPMN each activity that takes place in the event planning. This task is challenging because there is not a single way to model the activities because the notation is flexible, and the team must select the best element to represent the activities. It is vital to encourage the participation of the other team members by seeking agreements when there are different points of view to selecting one way of modeling each element of the process. Finally, each team member must complete the teamwork skills assessment tool. Results show that this activity enhances student`s knowledge of process modeling and improves their teamwork skills. It simulates the future work of engineering professionals working for an organization, where process modeling is essential for diagnosing and analyzing organization's problems and its execution must be carried out as a team to consider different points of view and reach a consensus on the solution to be adopted.
