CHARTING NEW HORIZONS: WHAT AGENTIC ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) PROMISES IN THE EDUCATIONAL LANDSCAPE

Generative artificial intelligence emerged as a promising topic with OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022. After the public announcement of ChatGPT technology, people have started to utilize these technologies as if they were using a social media platform. This intense demand for generative AI tools brings about different debates. It is emphasized that more work needs to be done on the potential benefits of productive AI technologies. Along with ChatGPT, hundreds of generative AI applications have started to be produced. It has become possible for every internet user to create text, audio, video, visual and many other products with simple prompts. Although ChatGPT was launched in 2022, it is claimed that 12% of adults in the US use the app. This data is remarkable in terms of demonstrating the societal interest in generative AI technologies.
One of the new debates in the world of generative AI is Agentic AI. What is Agentic AI? Agentic AI can be defined as a next-generation recommendation system powered by artificial intelligence. There are important details about what Agentic AI is and is not in the report published by OpenAI. In this report, the concept of Agentic AI is defined as “performing tasks for its user” and “completing a real-world task”. When the ideas put forward about Agentic AI are examined, we can state that they are no different from science fiction movies. In report on Agentic AI, stated that this new technology could be an auxiliary tool like “HAL” in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. In the movie, the “HAL” vehicle has actions such as routine control of the ship, interacting with the employees, providing fault detection, as well as being able to kill people in line with the decisions it makes. There are many studies on how this amazing new technology can be used in different fields. It is important to determine the purposes for which Agentic AI is used in educational environments. Because this new technology has the ability to directly intervene in human life beyond the information provided by generative artificial intelligence applications.
In this study, publications on Agentic AI will be analyzed by text mining. Text mining is a common approach used to create meaningful information sets from large chunks of information. By analyzing academic publications on Agentic AI with text mining, the focused topics will be revealed. In addition, a roadmap will be created for the applications to be realized in educational environments on Agentic AI. The change that Agentic AI can bring about in educational environments and the effects it will create will be discussed.
