LEARNING OF CLOTHING TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY CONTEXT AND CHALLENGE-BASED LEARNING
V. DaukantienÄ—
The integration of the innovative challenge-based learning (CBL) method in the program of the study module ‘Technology of Clothing’ of the undergraduate study programme ‘Fashion Engineering’ was applied to engage students in real creative challenges when developing clothing technologies. This learning method and the sustainability context help to respond effectively to the challenges facing the fashion industry, which must implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) established by the United Nations (UN) up to 2030. The CBL method is also advantageous for the development of students' teamwork and critical analytical skills necessary when developing a new fashion product and for planning their career in the dynamic fashion industry.
Therefore, taking into account the previous experience of teaching the study module and the sustainability challenges posed to the fashion industry, the necessary changes in the didactic were implemented. The topics were updated based on the latest research achievements in the study field and the sustainability requirements for the fashion industry directly related to the development of clothing technology. The module content has been implemented by smoothly integrating study methods such as theoretical lectures, laboratory work, case analysis, CBL, and discussion throughout the semester. The CBL method has replaced the traditional design project that was applied before. This integration of the CBL essentially transformed the motivation and mindset of students about the learning of clothing technology. The essential understanding of the students that each technological decision must not only be technically feasible but also sustainable and acceptable for the customer and the fashion industry has been evident when discussing the study outcomes at the end of the module studies.
