Research has demonstrated that early exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities in primary and secondary education fosters student engagement and interest in STEM disciplines. Interactive, inquiry-based activities can be instrumental in stimulating curiosity among young learners.

This paper presents an overview of a recent STEM outreach initiative conducted by an Austrian University of Applied Sciences as part of a state-funded program aimed at promoting STEM interest at the regional level. The project's primary objective was to inspire children and young adults to explore research, technology, and innovative solutions in an engaging and age-appropriate manner, irrespective of their geographical, linguistic, or cultural background, as well as their gender or prior educational experience.

Over an 18-month period, a series of customized workshops was implemented, focusing on lightweight engineering and its environmental implications. Participants explored lightweight design principles through hands-on, design-and-build activities utilizing everyday materials, age-appropriate software, and 3D printing technologies. Additionally, field trips to university research facilities provided opportunities for students to experiment with materials and analyse their properties, while visits to local companies specializing in lightweight engineering offered insights into industrial applications. The project culminated in a capstone event, where students shared their findings and experiences with peers and educators in their schools.

The paper concludes with an analysis of participant feedback from both students and teachers, a discussion of key lessons learned, and recommendations for future STEM outreach initiatives.
