Swansea University (UNITED KINGDOM)
As in all universities we are constantly searching for areas to improve our student learning and assessments. At Swansea University we asked ourselves which is the best form of examination to improve student learning? The traditional in-person examinations where students are invigilated in an examination room; the remote examination where the student can sit the examinations anywhere time constrained and the invigilated online examination where the students complete the examination on a computer in the classroom monitored by invigilators. The research will also focus on teaching delivery for each type of examinations from the lecturer’s point of view. Specifically, the study will look at the impact on student learning and student performance over these three modes, in-person, remote and invigilated online examinations.

The study will look to answer the following research questions:
- Which mode of examination is preferred by the students?
- Does student preparation change for each mode of examinations?
- Does student knowledge retention change after each mode of examinations?
- Does teaching delivery change for each mode of examinations?

Students will be asked to complete a questionnaire comprising of numerical scored questions and open questions allowing the students to provide more detailed observations. The questionnaire will cover the students learning experience before the examination, their performance and retention of knowledge. The lecturers involved in the different types of examinations will be interviewed to gain their feedback on the outcome of the modes of examinations and any areas for improvement. A literature review was also performed to gain greater understanding of the theories supporting the types of examination.
