THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AI ON DEVELOPING STUDENTS' SCIENTIFIC SKILLS IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A LITERATURE REVIEW
K. Bingimlas
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology that can potentially transform various aspects of society, including education. In higher education, AI holds the potential to revolutionize teaching methods and learning experiences by offering personalized and adaptive learning opportunities, providing immediate feedback, and facilitating collaborative learning and research. However, the impact of AI on developing students' scientific skills in higher education is still poorly understood. This literature review aims to fill this gap by synthesizing and analyzing existing studies on the impact of AI on developing students' scientific skills in higher education. The review addressed the following research question: What is the impact of AI on developing students' scientific skills in higher education, and what are the benefits and drawbacks of using AI in this context?
To achieve the goal of this literature review, various studies and publications related to AI and higher education, as well as scientific skill development, were extracted. Specifically, relevant articles on how AI influences the development of students' scientific skills in higher education were gathered from academic databases. These articles were then reviewed, critically analyzed, and used to shape the theme of this study. This literature review provides a comprehensive overview of the current research on the topic.
The result of this study showed that the integration of AI-based learning tools into higher education has the potential to enhance student's learning experiences and facilitate the development of their scientific skills. To optimize the benefits of AI in education, it is essential to implement the best practices, such as: embracing blended learning approaches, providing professional development for instructors, aligning AI-based tools with curriculum design, promoting inclusive and equitable design, and engaging in continuous evaluation and improvement.
The study highlighted the need for higher education institutions to consider adopting and integrating AI-based tools, analytics, and instructional methods into their curricula to support the development of scientific skills, improve academic performance, and enhance learning experiences. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of investing in faculty training, professional development, and partnerships with AI technology providers and addressing challenges such as costs and educational inequities. Future research should focus on identifying the best practices for implementing AI-based tools and systems and examining their long-term effects on students’ academic performance and career outcomes.
