A FRAMEWORK FOR MANAGING THE INTEGRATION OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: A HUMAN CAPITAL PERSPECTIVE
B. Mofosi, M. Matashu
This study aims to develop a framework for managing the integration of educational technologies in higher education institutions (HEIs) from a human capital perspective. The study recognises the importance of a holistic approach that involves the academics and students as key stakeholders contributing to the success of educational technologies in HEIs. The integrated framework integrates the perceptions affecting both academics and students in relation to their acceptance and use of educational technologies, the technological competence of academics, and students’ capabilities to partake in technology driven pedagogy. The challenge often overlooked in literature is that academics as employees are less affected by the affordability and accessibility factor of the educational technologies because they are supplied with all the necessary tools by their employer institutions, whereas students often are responsible for the costs associated with educational technologies. However, the study proposes that the element of technological competence of academics to apply technology effectively in relation to content and pedagogy is required to offer a holistic view of what could contribute to the effectiveness of educational technologies in HEIs. In addition to that is the students’ capabilities to afford, access, and use educational technologies as a contributory factor to their human capital development. There is growing need for the implementation of educational technologies to be managed in an approach that is inclusive and beneficial to all intended stakeholders, especially the students. The major challenge that the study is focused on, the absence of an integrated framework for managing the implementation of educational technologies in HEIs. This conceptual paper aims to develop a framework for managing the implementation of educational technologies in HEIs. The emerging framework may be presented as the major contribution to literature. Conclusions and recommendations will be drawn and provided.
