AI-powered technologies such as adaptive learning platforms, Natural Language Processing (NLP), speech recognition, chatbots, and intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are nowadays reshaping how languages are taught and acquired. This paper explores the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language learning, examining the new generation of AI enhanced applications, and the benefits they bring to language education.

This paper presents a wide spectrum of AI-driven applications and examines the ways in which they can help in individual aspects of language education. More specifically, it categorizes applications that can be useful in shaping personalized learning paths, in providing real-time feedback and error correction, in conversation practice through NLP, in pronunciation improvement through speech recognition, in content generation, in optimizing contextual vocabulary and grammar, in real-life interactive practice, as well as applications that use gamification to increase user engagement and motivation or to provide them with immersive experiences with AR/VR.

Beyond the above student-centered applications, the paper also examines AI’s benefits for educators, particularly in data-driven insights that facilitate progress tracking and instructional decision-making and highlight AI’s role in accessibility and inclusivity, as well in supporting learners with disabilities and bridging language gaps through real-time translation and cultural adaptation tools.

By providing a comprehensive overview of current AI applications in language learning, this paper offers insights into the evolving landscape of AI-enhanced education, addressing both the opportunities and limitations of these emerging technologies. The paper concludes with a discussion on future research directions and the ongoing development of AI-driven language learning solutions.
