Technological innovation fundamentally reshapes human activity. Educational institutions are key agents in developing a “knowledge society,” aligning STEAM education with societal needs and fostering innovation. A critical issue is the underrepresentation of women in STEM, impacting schools and higher education. Initiatives are needed to close this gap and motivate young women to explore STEAM careers.
This research investigates educational robotics' role in empowering young women in STEAM. It explores how female students connect with robots they create, fostering inquiry-based learning and innovation. By examining these connections, the study highlights teaching strategies to encourage future female STEAM professionals.
Cultural influences often steer girls away from technology. Interventions like female role models and hands-on projects are essential to attract girls, challenge stereotypes, and cultivate genuine interest in technology-driven fields.
The methodology involved 26 female elementary students (11-16) in northern Paraná, Brazil. Over five interactive sessions, they learned basic electronics and robotics, culminating in personalized robotic projects with sensor-activated triggers. Customization fostered emotional and intellectual connections. Discourse analysis captured insights into their engagement and STEAM perspectives.
Educational robotics develops technical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills. However, its school integration lags behind broader technological adoption, highlighting the need for adaptation amidst declining youth interest in science and technology.
Findings show hands-on robotics promoted inquiry-based learning and meaningful STEAM engagement. Female mentorship and collaborative projects effectively challenged gender stereotypes, boosting girls' confidence in technological fields. Early cultivation of girls' interest is crucial to counter societal norms.
In conclusion, educational robotics is a powerful tool to address gender disparities in technology education. By equipping students with essential skills and nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability, robotics fosters individual growth and systemic change, promoting more equitable and inclusive STEAM education and inspiring future female innovators.
