Introduction:
This paper examines students' perceptions regarding the presence of university values in the teaching performance of faculty at a public university in Mexico. University values, such as honesty, respect, and justice, are foundational to fostering integrity and ethical behaviours in academic institutions (Briceño-Caballero, 2024). These values are crucial in shaping students into ethical professionals and responsible citizens. However, the misalignment between institutional values and faculty behaviours, as perceived by students, raises concerns about the effectiveness of universities in fulfilling their moral and educational responsibilities. This research highlights the importance of understanding these perceptions to enhance the alignment between institutional values and teaching practices.
Methodology:
The study adopted a mixed-methods approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Data were collected through documentary analysis of institutional values; surveys administered to students and focus group discussions. The documentary analysis included a review of the value statements of 25 universities, 18 of which were public and 7 private. Surveys, conducted at the Autonomous University of Yucatan (México), explored student perceptions of ethical and unethical behaviours among faculty, while focus groups provided qualitative depth to the findings.
Results:
Findings reveal that honesty, respect, and justice are the most frequently stated institutional values across the universities studied. However, students reported unethical faculty behaviors such as "pretending to teach," favoritism, and a lack of professionalism, which they observed primarily in classroom settings. Faculty acknowledged the importance of values in teaching but identified challenges such as student apathy and their disinterest in fostering these values. Both faculty and students highlighted responsibility, respect, and ethics as key values to promote within the academic environment.
Conclusions:
The study concludes that while university values are present in institutional philosophy, there is a gap between these values and faculty practices as students perceive. This discrepancy negatively impacts teaching and learning processes and students' perceptions of education. To address this, universities must prioritize ongoing faculty training in ethics, evaluate teaching practices, and foster an institutional culture that aligns closely with declared values. These measures are essential to ensure that universities fulfil their role as centres of ethical and professional excellence.
