Greenversity is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to address the urgent need for enhancing Green Competencies within higher education. At its core, the project recognizes a significant gap in knowledge and skills related to sustainability—a gap with serious implications for addressing today’s environmental challenges. By bridging this divide, Greenversity not only seeks to empower individuals with green skills but also to foster excellence in learning, teaching, and professional development.
The program adopts a holistic and forward-thinking triple-bottom-line approach, aligning its efforts with the key dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. With this vision, Greenversity aspires to promote sustainable practices and cultivate "green thinking" across the academic community, inspiring a new generation equipped to lead change.
To achieve its mission, the initiative is built around three main dimensions:
(i) the Framework, which integrates the European Framework of Green Competencies into an accessible and accreditable program for higher education institutions. This serves as the foundation for building expertise and embedding sustainability in academic structures;
(ii) a focus on educators, referred to as "Gears," to equip them with the tools and motivation needed to effectively teach green competencies. This includes access to a digital training center, a Train-the-Trainer methodology, e-courses, and opportunities for networking and professional recognition; and
(iii) an emphasis on students, called "Ambassadors," providing them with resources such as a digital learning center, face-to-face courses, and networking opportunities to help them develop and apply green skills in meaningful ways.
Collaboration lies at the heart of Greenversity’s efforts. A consortium of six partner institutions, coordinated by the University of València, is working together to bring this vision to life. These include Jyväskylän Yliopisto in Finland, Université de Bourgogne in France, Agencia Valenciana de Evaluación y Prospectiva in Spain, F6S Network Ireland Limited in Ireland, Universitatea Lucian Blaga din Sibiu in Romania, and Irmandade da Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Amadora in Portugal.
Together, these institutions are implementing a series of structured activities grouped into five work packages, covering project management, the development of educational resources, the training of educators, student engagement, and long-term strategies to ensure the project’s sustainability.
To achieve its goals, Greenversity is also leveraging the power of digital platforms, and celebrating and rewarding excellence. Through e-courses and online training centers, the project also focuses on improving digital competencies within the academic community. Moreover, short-term initiatives aim to provide academic recognition for newly acquired competencies, offering credentials that validate expertise and encourage further growth. In the long term, the project envisions its framework becoming an integral part of how academic qualifications are certified.
Ultimately, Greenversity is more than just a program; it is a call to action for academia to play a leading role in fostering sustainability. By empowering educators and students alike, it seeks to create lasting change, ensuring that the leaders of tomorrow are prepared to tackle the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
