INNOVATING MOOC EDUCATION: THE ROLE OF INTERACTIVE VIDEOS IN TEACHING AI TO NEW LEARNERS
Z. Sofyan, C. Meinel
Integrating interactive videos into Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) has been suggested as a way to boost student engagement, particularly in understanding complex subjects like artificial intelligence (AI). This study examines how interactive videos affect student engagement in AI-related MOOCs offered on the KI-Campus platform. By examining data from user interaction within the interactive content and learning analytics, we explore the strategy used by the teaching team to increase the engagement level of the learners.
Our research focuses on beginner-level AI courses, ensuring consistency in topic complexity and learner demographics. We selected courses known for their extensive use of interactive videos for self-assessment. Our analysis looked at how these videos were implemented—where the interactive videos appeared within the course, the types of interactive content inside the video used, and the user interaction. Engagement was gauged using metrics such as enrollment figures, user commitment, and knowledge improvement and satisfaction based on the pre and post-survey conducted.
The results demonstrate that when interactive videos are thoughtfully integrated into the course using effective strategies, there is a notable increase in learner engagement within MOOCs. Students in these courses reported that incorporating interactive videos with diverse interactive elements kept them more interested and improved their understanding of the subject matter. The interactive components allowed for immediate application and self-assessment, reinforcing learning and sustaining their motivation.
Our study highlights the positive impact that interactive videos can have on student engagement in AI MOOCs. For educators, this underscores the value of carefully integrating interactive components into course materials to maximize student involvement. Future research might expand on these findings by examining other subject areas or investigating how different kinds of interactive media influence learning outcomes.
