HARNESSING THE EXISTING DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT FOR KNOWLEDGE CREATION AND INCLUSION IN DIVERSE CLASSES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
A. Dewa, M. Tshidi
Digital technology is transforming and reshaping our day-today operations and daily activities. In schools use of digital technologies has gained significant momentum, with immense potential to revolutionise pedagogical approaches that promote student engagement, fostering knowledge creation, and promoting inclusion in diverse classrooms. The paper provides a thorough analysis of research on the digital technology tools used in teaching in South Africa from 2013 to 2024. Literature resources discussing digital technologies that promote knowledge creation in diverse classrooms was gathered using databases like Web of Science and Scopus. The search was filtered down to include more relevant content using the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT. The findings revealed that some schools have successfully incorporated digital technologies to some degree, while others struggle with issues like lack of resources and limited knowledge and expertise among teachers. New digital tools such as multimedia, collaborative software, and interactive learning platforms may lead to students participation in active learning and create individualised learning experiences that meet and support diverse needs. Harnessing digital tools, in some parts of South Africa, educators create more dynamic, inclusive, and equitable learning environments, ultimately promoting knowledge creation and make learners to become active participants in their learning journeys. The study recommends adequate professional development that equips teachers with the skills and confidence needed to incorporate digital technologies into their teaching practices effectively. This not only enhances the learning experience but also ensures that all students, including those with challenges or from diverse cultural backgrounds, have equal opportunities to learning. When educators are properly prepared, they can fully leverage the potential of digital technology to create more dynamic, inclusive, and engaging learning environments.
