Knowledge is a topic of interest for those who recognize its impact as intangible asset in organizations, including higher education institutions, which have incorporated information and communication technologies (ICT) in their academic practice, along with the e-learning model to develop their training and management processes. The objective of this work is to propose a guide of good practices for knowledge management and innovation in virtual education scenarios for higher education institutions, based on mission axes such as Extension, teaching and research. The methodological process was based on a methodological complementarity approach, linked to the use of multiple strategies to address the study of an object of research. This is evidenced by using techniques, like survey (quantitative), complementing with techniques like the focus group (qualitative), to allow having a more complex, broad, systematic, and global vision of the way knowledge management processes function in formation scenarios, responding to that stated in the proposed objectives. The findings converge into four integrative elements, starting from the construction of knowledge and learning through the implementation of socialization, combination, externalization and internalization processes. These processes, without a doubt, energize training in virtual, remote and in-person educational settings. All these elements, dynamic since their conception, are made up of human capital, structural capital (technology), relational capital (organizational culture) and motivation and innovation (educational sector). These elements are presented to consolidate knowledge management and innovation in virtual education scenarios that, day by day, become more important in higher education.
