This paper presents the findings of an empirical study on early childhood intervention (ECI) in Italy, focusing on family-centered and transdisciplinary approaches. The study explores how these approaches are integrated into the Italian ECI system, analyzing legislative frameworks, policy documents, and existing research. To provide a comprehensive perspective, the study includes data collected through interviews and observations conducted with professionals and families engaged in ECI services across Italy.

Italy's ECI system, particularly the South Tyrol region, is known for its emphasis on inclusion and family-centered practices. The research examines how these principles are operationalized, identifying the system's strengths, such as its coordinated service delivery and cultural sensitivity, as well as its challenges, including variability in service availability and the need for enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Italian case study is part of a broader comparative research project involving Portugal and Latvia. By examining the practices and experiences in Italy, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of ECI implementation in diverse cultural and systemic contexts. Lessons learned from Italy's approach offer valuable insights for other countries seeking to improve their ECI systems, particularly in developing family-centered and transdisciplinary strategies.

The findings are particularly relevant for Latvia, which is in the process of developing its ECI framework. Insights from Italy highlight both best practices and potential pitfalls, aiding Latvian policymakers and practitioners in building a more effective and inclusive intervention system.

This study not only enriches the international discourse on ECI but also provides actionable recommendations for enhancing the welfare and development of children and families through improved intervention strategies.
