This paper explores the development and challenges of degree-granting online education in Portugal, focusing specifically on disciplines related to finance offered at Universidade Europeia. Since the introduction of legislation in 2019, which allows degree online programs by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), there has been significant growth in the adoption of online learning modalities. Despite this progress, there is still limited empirical evidence on academic success in these contexts, particularly in understanding how curriculum design, teaching methods, and digital learning environments influence outcomes in specialized areas such as finance.

Based on a comprehensive review of the evolution of online and distance education in global and Portuguese contexts, this study adopts a dual empirical approach. It examines and compares the academic performance of students in finance-related curricular units across two dimensions: online versus on-campus delivery modes and between different online degree programs. The analysis focuses on identifying critical factors related to curriculum design, student engagement strategies, and the integration of innovative methodologies, such as the flipped classroom, that may contribute to improved academic success in these units. Particular attention is paid to how financial education, a discipline with specific cognitive demands and practical applications, can be effectively adapted to online teaching environments while maintaining rigor and relevance.

This research aims to contribute to the ongoing improvement of degree-granting online education in Portugal by providing actionable insights into the design and delivery of specialized curricular units. The findings are expected to assist educators and institutions in identifying best practices for fostering student engagement, optimizing academic performance, and addressing the unique challenges associated with online learning in technical fields like finance. In addition, this study aims to make a broader contribution to the field of online higher education by highlighting how evidence-based curricular strategies and pedagogical innovation can enhance the overall quality and sustainability of online programs, particularly in specialized disciplines that require high levels of analytical and applied knowledge.
