INTEGRATING THE 5ES MODEL IN INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING: A FRAMEWORK FOR DEVELOPING 21ST-CENTURY SKILLS AND ADVANCING GLOBAL GOALS
I. Rodrigues
This paper examines the application of the 5Es instructional model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—within an inquiry-based learning (IBL) framework, aimed at fostering 21st-century competencies while addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rooted in constructivist pedagogy, this methodology facilitates a structured yet flexible approach to student-centered learning, prioritizing critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication as core outcomes. By embedding global challenges into the learning process, the model also cultivates learners’ ability to engage with real-world issues and develop actionable, interdisciplinary solutions.
The 5Es model provides a scaffold for guiding students through sequential phases of inquiry, enabling them to construct knowledge progressively. The methodology aligns with the goals of contemporary education by promoting advanced cognitive skills and fostering engagement through authentic tasks and reflective practices. Furthermore, the incorporation of SDGs, such as SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) in the case study presented, situates the learning experience within a broader socio-environmental context, ensuring relevance and meaningfulness.
While the methodology is applicable across various educational contexts, this paper highlights its practical implementation in an interdisciplinary project addressing SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. The approach blended multiple subjects—language, science, technical design, and ICT—allowing students to collaboratively design and communicate sustainable solutions. The learning journey culminated in authentic assessments, including public presentations and reflective evaluations.
The findings suggest that this methodological approach not only enhances academic achievement but also fosters holistic development, equipping students with the skills necessary to address complex global challenges. This paper aims to inspire educators to empower their students not only to meet academic goals but also to become proactive problem-solvers and global citizens, ready to meet the challenges of an interconnected world.
