REDEFINING LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION FOR A VUCA WORLD: THE CASE OF WEBSTER UNIVERSITY’S GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM
J. Sandholm-Bark
As higher education faces mounting scrutiny for its relevance and value, the liberal arts stand at a critical crossroads. To remain impactful in an era defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), universities must reimagine their curricula to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global landscape. This paper delves into transformative strategies to ensure the enduring vitality of liberal arts education, focusing on integrating interdisciplinary and experiential learning, embedding essential transferable skills—such as critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and communication—and leveraging technology to enhance accessibility and engagement.
With campuses located in eight different countries and three continents, Webster University stands as a beacon of innovation in higher education, demonstrating how a university can successfully transform its general education curriculum. At the heart of this transformation is the Global Citizenship Program (GCP), a forward-thinking approach to liberal arts education. By integrating global themes, fostering critical skill development, and offering experiential learning opportunities, the GCP empowers students to tackle pressing societal challenges such as sustainability, equity, and global interconnectedness. It serves as a model for preparing graduates who are not only equipped for dynamic careers but also inspired to lead and make meaningful contributions as engaged global citizens.
This paper argues that adaptability, innovation, and collaboration are essential for liberal arts education to thrive in the 21st century. By blending humanistic and practical skills, institutions can prepare students to navigate and lead in the complex realities of a VUCA world, ensuring that liberal arts remain a cornerstone of higher education and societal progress.
