The spectacular advance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has meant a major breakthrough in teaching and learning mechanisms. It is defined as "the ability of a system to correctly interpret external data, learn from that data, and apply that learning to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation". AI has become an essential aspect of people's daily lives. Researchers have concluded that this tool has continued to grow and evolve over the past year, becoming more capable of mimicking human intelligence. Among the new AI applications, ChatGPT stands out. It is an artificial intelligence model created by the company OpenAI, which uses a generation natural language processing (NLP) model called GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). This tool was launched on 30 November (2022) and is very popular because it can be quite effective for natural language processing tasks.
In the educational context, this application is causing a revolution because it is a tool that is becoming a great ally for students. There are several reasons for its acceptance by students. For example, it is capable of accurately translating texts, making calculations, establishing arguments, summarizing reports and news, and coding, among other things. Students have therefore embraced this technology because of its ability to provide personalized learning, dynamic assessments and meaningful interactions in blended learning environments. However, despite the potential benefits in education, there are doubts about whether the benefits will outweigh the risks. Various scholars argue that AI causes a decrease in interest in lectures, classes or books, information bias, correct information, anxiety, inappropriate content, a less critical sense, a deterioration in relationships between students.
To this end, a questionnaire was administered to students from different degree courses at the University of Seville and the University of Huelva. Regarding the results obtained, in general, students are familiar with the use of ChatGPT. However, other students are of the opinion that ChatGPT has a series of negative effects on education, such as decreased interest in reading or in class, or inappropriate information.
The main conclusions of this study show that, despite the advantages ChatGPT can have in education, it should be used with caution and try to exploit its potential to transform general education. Finally, in terms of practical applications, we recommend teachers to use ChatGPT for its educational benefits, but with caution because of information gaps or decreased interest in learning.
