INNOVATIONS IN AFRICAN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: BLENDING TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL LEARNING APPROACHES

This study explores innovative approaches to teaching African languages by blending traditional methods with digital technology. Highlighting possible projects across secondary and tertiary institutions, we examine how audio-visual aids, language apps, and gamified exercises can enhance engagement and language retention. Our research posits that incorporating technology in African language instruction will not only facilitate effective learning but will also cultivate pride and interest in students’ linguistic and cultural heritage. Implications for curriculum development and teacher training are also discussed, emphasizing the need for sustainable, context-sensitive language teaching practices. This experimental study is envisaged to test the effects of audio-visual aids, language apps and gamified exercises in the teaching and learning of African languages in a multilingual South Africa. Data will be collected from 30 school from three provinces: Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. The study will raise awareness about innovations in African language instruction which blend traditional and digital learning approaches. The study add contributes to knowledge increase in the teaching and learning of African languages through digital innovations, advocating for transformation, inclusion, and the development of African languages in digital age.
