We explore evolving landscape of smart classrooms with a focus on integration of sustainable Internet of Things technologies. It systematically reviews current trends, highlighting how IoT innovations reshape educational environments to enhance learning experiences and improve resource efficiency. We analysis the impact of smart technologies on classroom design, teaching methodologies, and sustainability practices, offering a balanced view of the benefits and challenges of adopting IoT in educational contexts. By examining practical examples and theoretical insights, the chapter underscores the potential of sustainable IoT solutions to create adaptive, efficient, and environmentally conscious educational spaces, setting a strong foundation for the future of learning. This exploration contributes valuable perspectives for educators, policymakers, and technologists on shaping next-generation educational environments through IoT-driven innovation and sustainability efforts.
A systematic review of 48 articles selected from an initial pool of 154 through a literature search across databases like Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, and ERIC, using keywords “smart classrooms,” “sustainable IoT,” and “resource efficiency." Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024 and addressing smart classrooms or sustainable IoT. Exclusion criteria removed non-peer-reviewed, older, non-relevant, or inaccessible articles. The screening process involved reviewing titles, abstracts, and full texts, resulting in 48 articles for analysis. Qualitative thematic analysis was performed to identify and code key themes and subthemes using NVivo. Frequencies and percentages of themes were calculated to highlight their prominence. Inter-rater reliability was ensured through independent coding and consensus-building, and data triangulation enhanced the robustness of findings.
We highlight the significant shift from traditional teaching methods to dynamic and interactive learning environments, where digital tools such as smartboards, tablets, and IoT-enabled devices play a pivotal role. These technologies enhance student engagement and collaboration while contributing to more efficient and resource-conscious classroom management practices. Key focus is placed on the dual impact of these innovations on education and sustainability. IoT technologies enable real-time monitoring and optimization of classroom conditions, leading to better learning environments and reduced resource consumption. This emphasis on sustainability is further reinforced by the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and digital, paperless classrooms, aligning with global initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of educational institutions.
We also address challenges related to the widespread adoption of smart classroom technologies, including data privacy, security, and the digital divide, and stress the importance of ethical frameworks and policies to govern the use of these technologies, ensuring equitable and inclusive implementation. Additionally, discusses the potential for artificial intelligence to further enhance smart classrooms while acknowledging the ethical considerations tied to its deployment. Overall, study offers a forward-looking perspective on the future of smart classrooms, emphasizing the continuous evolution of technologies and their ability to create more adaptive, efficient, and sustainable learning environments.
