PERCEPTION OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING MOBILE APPLICATIONS AMONG LLB UNDERGRADUATES: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
A. Kiseleva, P. Novikov
The main research aim of this study is to examine perceptions, challenges, and opportunities of introducing mobile language learning applications to undergraduate students of law (LLB). The study was conducting using mixed methodology, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods through comprehensive oral and written surveys, automated polls and freeform discussions. Furthermore, behavioral factors were used in observation of a language learning application being tested with the sample size including 71 students of diverse backgrounds as well as various technical skills and CEFR levels of English mastery ranging from A2 to C1.
The research was designed in order to serve such goals as discovery of students’ preferences and learning styles, evaluating the influence of user experience and content on the perception of learning efficiency and brainstorming various ways and tools that would serve the students to create a near-perfect and effective learning experience that would have a synergetic effect with the main curriculum.
The findings and thematic analysis helped us to identify the interaction patterns, preferred features, and encountered difficulties and visualize the data in a coherent and quantifiable way. It is important to note that the opinions were frequently polarizing. Even though the age group that participants belonged to is frequently classified as a generation of digital natives, findings often revealed that the attitude to technology and expectation of its efficiency were often low despite the technological progress. The recent advancements in the latter led to a much higher computing power and high-speed Internet connections that make it possible to seamlessly stream rich media content, effectively removing any limitations imposed by the traditional curriculum and offline solutions.
The study also revealed a need for a high desirable level of learning customization which may further be facilitated by the most recent developments in content creation through the use of generative AI. However, incorporating such elements should be approached with extreme care and not as an innovation for the sake of innovation, as it may often be the case for numerous edtech solutions. Further, the research helped us to obtain some more technical insights into the influence of UX (user experience) on the navigability of various elements and led us to establishing best practices in that area.
