SMART DIVERSITY-EQUITY-INCLUSION PLAN FOR HELIOSTAT SOLAR ENERGY COMMUNITY
D. Kim
University of Arizona (UNITED STATES)
The heliostat solar energy research project, a collaboration between the University of Arizona (UA) and the Australian National University (ANU), exemplifies a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Through the application of the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) framework, the project integrates DEI objectives into its research project, "Construction and Test of Twisting Heliostats Targeting High Temperature CSP (Concentrating Solar-Thermal Power) and CST (Concentrating Solar-Thermal)." A key metric of DEI success is the participation and full-time equivalencies (FTEs) of underrepresented students engaged in the project and its associated educational initiatives. Especially, the project aims to actively involve women and minorities who are underrepresented in the solar energy industry and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. As the second-largest Hispanic Minority Serving Institution in the United States, UA is uniquely positioned to foster inclusion, while ANU, as a national university in a diverse country like Australia, remains committed to addressing the underrepresentation of women in STEM. This SMART-focused effort is designed to benefit women and underrepresented students across both countries by providing them with opportunities to build international academic connections and intellectual bonds. These cultural exchanges will enrich participants' educational experiences, broaden their global perspectives, and cultivate a sense of belonging within the heliostat CSP community. Additionally, by co-leading initiatives such as the Heliostat Practical Optics Workshop and annual outreach events like Solar-Day at UA, the project team will inspire future generations of local high school students, particularly those who have been underrepresented in the field, fostering a more diverse and inclusive international solar energy community.
