Nature-based education is gaining widespread recognition as a transformative approach within educational systems, offering learners immersive, hands-on experiences that foster a profound connection to the natural world. This educational model is supported by recent research that demonstrates the efficacy of nature-based activities not only in enhancing environmental literacy but also in cultivating essential life skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and resilience. This paper examines the integration of nature-based education into informal learning environments, drawing from our extensive experience in community education programs, youth initiatives, and outdoor learning projects. These informal settings present unique opportunities to transcend traditional classroom boundaries, creating flexible and adaptive learning environments that meet the diverse needs of learners. Engagement with nature has been shown to significantly improve cognitive function, reduce stress, and enhance creativity—benefits that are increasingly critical in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven society. The wide range of activities explored in this paper—including ecological restoration projects, guided wilderness expeditions, and nature-themed arts and crafts—helps participants develop a strong sense of environmental stewardship. These activities not only impart practical skills that are directly applicable to real-world challenges but also foster social and emotional learning (SEL). The demands of teamwork, effective communication, and navigating complex, often unpredictable natural environments make nature-based education particularly effective in building these competencies. Moreover, this paper highlights the significant impact that nature-based education programs have on participants' cognitive and emotional well-being, while also promoting eco-conscious behaviours. By fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the environment, these programs contribute to long-term societal changes towards sustainability and environmental responsibility. The integration of nature-based education into informal settings is not just a complementary approach to traditional education but a necessary evolution in cultivating the next generation of environmentally aware and socially responsible citizens.
