HOW THE BLIND SEE CHATGPT AND GEMINI: A CASE STUDY FROM A SUMMER SCHOOL FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENTS

Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Gemini are becoming a common part of daily as well as student life. They provide quick and reasonably accurate answers to a variety of questions, making learning and problem-solving easier. At our summer school for visually impaired students, there was significant interest in understanding and using LLMs. To address this interest, we organized a workshop on how to work with ChatGPT and Gemini on their official websites. In our case study, we focused on exploring how blind participants perceived this activity and how they rated the accessibility of both websites. We noted that these participants were thrilled with the responses they received from both ChatGPT and Gemini. However, navigating these LLM websites was challenging for them. Based on our findings, we were formulating recommendations for other educators so that they can also teach their blind students how to use these websites. We also believe our findings can inspire the developers of these websites to improve accessibility. LLMs can significantly change the way we think and learn. We believe that blind students should not be excluded from this rapidly changing world.
