Teacher leadership has become a topic of discussion in efforts to improve teacher professionalism and school reform. Teachers as leaders have a very important role for students, fellow teachers and the entire school community. They are influential in the continuous improvement of educational practices. The concept of teacher leadership is a transformation of work culture change by relating the attitude of teachers to make improvements in the context of their own schools. Therefore, teachers need to be prepared to take responsibility as leaders either when they are with students or in other groups of fellow teachers. This pilot study aims to determine the validity and validate the Motivation to Lead instrument to explain the leadership motivation of school teachers in Malaysia. The instrument was verified in terms of face validity and content validity by experts in the field of study. The sample from the study consisted of 50 trained teachers who were selected using a random sampling technique from several secondary schools in Kelantan. Data were collected online for content validation analysis and reliability analysis through the calculation of Cronbach's Alpha values. Analysis shows that the Motivation to Lead (MTL) consists of 27 items and 3 factors: Affective identity, non-calculative and social normative MTL is a valid instrument, reliable and can be used as a measurement tool for real studies. It is hoped that MTL will be a reliable instrument to measure leadership motivation in the context of Malaysian Education.
