USING GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS TO SIMPLIFY COUNSELING EDUCATION: A METHOD TO EASE ANXIETY AND BUILD ESSENTIAL SKILLS IN FUTURE COUNSELORS

This methods article presents an innovative approach to teaching basic counseling skills to undergraduate students aspiring to become future counselors. Recognizing the high levels of anxiety often experienced by students when first encountering the complexities of the counseling process, we introduce the use of graphic organizers as a pedagogical tool to simplify and demystify these essential skills. The proposed method integrates visual aids to break down the counseling process into manageable components, fostering a structured and clear understanding for students.

This visual representation aids in the comprehension of key concepts and techniques, reducing cognitive overload and anxiety. Furthermore, the article outlines a step-by-step curriculum that progressively builds students' skills, ensuring a solid foundation before advancing to more intricate aspects of counseling.

Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical exercises, students gain confidence and competence in their abilities. The effectiveness of this method is supported by qualitative feedback from students and instructors, demonstrating a notable decrease in anxiety and an increase in skill acquisition and retention. This article contributes to the field of counselor education by providing a clear, structured, and anxiety-reducing approach to teaching foundational counseling skills, equipping future counselors with the tools necessary for their professional development.
