The theoretical and empirical paper emphasizes the importance of institutional education of seniors against the background of demographic aging, when changes in the age structure of the population are occurring. The share of older age groups is growing faster than the rest of the population and as a result the share of the post-replacement component (65+ years) in the total population is growing. This demographic shift has major implications for society, especially for the role of seniors as clients, patients and participants in educational activities. Universities of the Third Age in the Czech Republic are among the most important educational entities specialising in pedagogical work with the elderly and providing them with the most demanding education at university level. Current technological advances are influencing the content of education for seniors, with digital literacy becoming essential for participation in cultural and social life.

The present study presents partial results of an empirical investigation, the main aim of which was to identify and analyse selected aspects of digital literacy of the students of a specific university of the third age and interpret them in the context of the possible use of digital technologies in the institutional education of seniors. In accordance with the specific objectives and characteristics of the research investigation, a mixed research design was chosen. This approach allowed for a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodological strategies, resulting in effective data integration and interpretation. In the pilot phase of the research, a focus group method of data collection was chosen, followed by a questionnaire survey in an effort to contribute to the validity of the research instrument.

The survey results showed that while most participants have high levels of digital literacy, significant gaps remain in advanced digital skills, particularly in the use of social media and other digital platforms. Social context, such as support from family and friends, was identified as a major factor influencing levels of digital technology use. These findings point to the need for targeted training programmes that develop advanced digital skills and take into account the specific needs of older adults.

The sub-objective of the survey was to assess the strengths and weaknesses and to propose the optimisation of existing educational programmes for the older population within the framework of the University of the Third Age. In this context, the evaluation carried out appears to be a key tool for optimising and improving educational programmes. The results of the investigation have provided concrete recommendations and the identification of strategies for the organizers of adult education of the specific target group 65+.
