This paper presents a comprehensive literature review that examines existing research and theoretical frameworks related to the cultural heritage of the Umbrian Apennine Ridge. Focused on this part of the Umbria region, this study analyzes the interplay between history, religion, tradition, art, and economy. The review aims to uncover and assess the "hidden" and often inaccessible monuments (particularly churches) of cultural heritage, and to analyze the iconography and meaning that sacred representations acquire in relation to the communities that venerate them. By highlighting these elements, this study seeks to preserve, promote, and enhance cultural heritage to ensure its intergenerational transmission.

It is well-established that the material aspects of cultural heritage are exposed to serious risks of erosion: culture is a resource that is consumed and inevitably deteriorates. From this perspective, we observe, on the one hand, phenomena of overtourism concentrated in sites of particular historical, artistic, and religious significance, and on the other, the marginalization of small villages and their unique attributes.

Therefore, it is important to conduct a preliminary study that systematically investigates the cultural fabric that unites history, religion, tradition, art, and economy in the villages of the Umbrian Apennine Ridge. This project aims to transform the rich cultural heritage of small Umbrian villages into a learning opportunity to advance the acquisition of skills necessary for integration and social participation in an informal, multimedia, and accessible manner.

It proposes educational solutions tailored to youth and adult education, thereby fitting within a lifelong learning framework that prioritizes adult involvement in learning pathways outside formal contexts. This approach emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning in promoting active citizenship and mobility within European borders, while also maintaining a global focus.

From an inclusive and pro-social perspective, the integrated learning of historical-artistic, digital, and social skills will be promoted through the use of mobile learning and microlearning strategies. An analysis of the territorial context and a comprehensive review of the literature have revealed a significant gap in research addressing the cultural heritage of the Umbrian Apennine region from an educational perspective. Despite the region's rich historical and artistic patrimony, there is a lack of studies exploring how this cultural wealth can be leveraged for educational purposes. This deficiency highlights the need for a focused investigation that not only documents the cultural assets of the area but also examines their potential to contribute to educational initiatives aimed at fostering cultural awareness and identity among both local and broader communities.
