TRANSFORMING EDUCATION WITH COLLABORATIVE GAMES: AN INTERACTIVE LEARNING ECOSYSTEM TO FOSTER STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
I. Zahra, M. Neo
Emerging technologies are reshaping traditional teaching and learning approaches, leading to profound transformations in the educational landscape. Digital gaming platforms, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications with the infusion of artificial intelligence (AI) represent significant advancements in education. These technologies serve as essential tools that not only enhance student engagement but also accommodate diverse learning preferences through personalised and interactive learning experiences. However, their integration into higher education presents significant challenges, requiring effective implementation and customisation tailored to meet the specific educational needs of students.
Therefore, in order to address these challenges this research aims to redesign and evaluate a Collaborative and Interactive Game-Based Learning Environment (CIGLE) by integrating game-based learning principles with the foundational components of communities of practice. The study aims to investigate students’ perceptions of CIGLE and assess its effectiveness in enhancing students’ critical thinking, problem solving skills and motivation by engaging them in their collaborative learning process. CIGLE was designed to create a dynamic and interactive educational experience that promotes intrinsic motivation and deeper cognitive engagement among students. In order to conduct this research, a mixed method approach was employed, involving 126 participants to comprehensively analyse and evaluate the data on students’ perceptions and learning experiences. Quantitative data were gathered through an online survey using a 5-point Likert scale, providing insights into students’ attitudes and satisfaction levels. In addition, qualitative data of this research study were put together through open ended questions to obtain profound insights of students’ learning experiences and perceptions of the redesigned learning environment named CIGLE.
The implementation of these innovative pedagogical approaches with modern technological tools, the study identified significant enhancements in students’ intrinsic motivation, engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. The adoption of the CIGLE framework within classroom environments effectively fostered vibrant communities of practice, where students collaboratively explored and applied knowledge, enriching their overall learning experiences.
This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on effective educational practices integrating technology and collaborative learning approaches in the modern learning environment. It underscores the importance of tailored educational strategies that leverage emerging technologies to create engaging and effective learning environments, preparing students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
