BRIDGING THE DIGITALIZATION GAP: HOW UNIVERSITY-LED DIHS CAN EMPOWER SMES IN THE DIGITAL AGE

The digital revolution presents a complex landscape for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). While offering immense potential for growth, digital transformation also requires navigating new technologies and adapting business models. Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) emerge as a potential bridge, providing SMEs with access to expertise, resources, and networks. This paper specifically focuses on University-led DIHs, exploring their effectiveness in supporting SMEs in Southeast Finland.

Universities, with their research prowess and talent pool, hold promise for leading DIHs. However, their traditional strengths can also present challenges. University curricula may not always align with the immediate, practical needs of SMEs. Research agendas are often heavily influenced by external funding, potentially leading to a disconnect with SME priorities. Additionally, the academic language and bureaucratic processes within universities can create a barrier to entry for some SMEs seeking practical solutions.

This research seeks to understand how University-led DIHs can overcome these potential hurdles. Drawing on the observational experience from two DIH projects, the study will investigate key themes for successful implementation. The research will explore methods to ensure a low barrier to entry for SMEs, focusing on clear communication and value-creation initiatives. Furthermore, the paper will examine strategies for bridging the gap between academic research and practical applications, taking advantage of the strong pedagogical skills within university settings. Additionally, the research will consider how DIHs can navigate the cyclical nature of business operations, aligning services with university curricula. Finally, the study will explore the role of collaboration and network leadership within university-led DIHs. Here, the focus will be on connecting SMEs with relevant funding sources, research institutions, and other stakeholders within the innovation ecosystem.

This research employs a mixed-methods approach. By combining insights from project management experience with a quantitative dataset (n=1002) and qualitative theme interviews from local SMEs, the paper aims to provide valuable insights for universities considering establishing or improving DIH initiatives. The ultimate goal is to gain an understanding of how university-led DIHs can bridge the digitalization gap, empowering SMEs to navigate the digital revolution effectively.
