Using Generative AI to support more engaging learning experiences

Pattie Maes. MIT (USA)

EDULEARN24
Pattie Maes leads the Fluid Interfaces research group at the MIT Media Lab, where she conducts research at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction and Artificial Intelligence. In this talk, she presents several prototypes and experiments that her group have created which utilize Generative AI (GenAI) in novel ways to create personalized, interactive, and engaging learning experiences. These experiences span various domains, including language learning, critical thinking, public speaking, history, and self-development. She also reviews the results of qualitative and quantitative studies on these systems and their impact on the learning experience and outcomes. This insightful presentation highlights the importance of combined Human+AI systems in enhancing the future impact of this technology.

When and How Flipped Learning is Effective

Manu Kapur. ETH Zurich (Switzerland)

EDULEARN24
In this talk, Manu Kapur, Director of the Singapore-ETH Centre, shares findings from an analysis of 46 meta-analyses and a meta-analysis of 173 studies on flipped learning, suggesting that most flipped learning interventions have underdelivered on the promise of active learning. Based on this research, Kapur presents a new and more specific model for flipped learning. In the 4F Model—Fail, Flip, Fix, and Feed—students are first asked to engage in generating solutions to novel problems, even if they fail to produce correct solutions, before receiving instruction. Finally, Kapur reveals the effectiveness of applying this new model.
