PIONEERING AI ADOPTION IN HIGHER EDUCATION: EMPOWERING UNIVERSITY TEACHERS THROUGH TRAINING
O. Bogdanova
Recent technological advancements have been transforming the teaching and learning practices for many years. The most recent of those, generative AI, is one of the most disruptive to higher education, offering opportunities for transforming teaching but, at the same time, significant challenges, and risks. The rapid adoption of this technology sparked many debates on how to integrate AI into teaching and learning and how to deal with academic integrity. European Union supports the ethical adoption of AI for teaching and learning by introducing policy documents and guidelines for educators. However, there is a notion that while students are on the front line of technology adoption, quite often teachers don’t even try to use AI tools. Despite growing interest, there is a lack of structured training programs addressing teachers' AI adoption challenges in higher education. To address this issue, the Erasmus+ -funded Pathfinder project has developed a teachers' training aiming at increasing AI skills. The training consists of 5 modules and has been tested with the first pilot group of 16 teachers at the higher education institution (HEI) in Finland. The training covered the topics of addressing fears, misconceptions, and ethical considerations; Fundamentals of AI, trying and testing tools, prompt engineering; AI-driven curriculum and lessons planning, relevant tasks and exams; and AI-assisted teaching and learning. This article provides an in-depth description of the course outline and content, feedback from the teachers, and further recommendations for teaching. The results of this study will be of particular use to educators planning to utilize generative AI for their classes.
