Mastering the Media: Understanding the Evolving Information Ecosystem and Building New Literacies in the Digital Age

Our students are consuming (on average) over ten hours of media per day. This session explores the shifting dynamics of this media age, and how these changes impact education, critical thinking, and discourse. Attendees will learn strategies for fostering media and information literacy skills in their students, with a focus on navigating social media, recognizing misinformation, and engaging with digital content responsibly. They will leave with a new understanding and appreciation of how media analysis abilities are cross-curricular and truly a 21st century survival skill.

Outcomes: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Analyze the evolution of the media and information ecosystem, including the impact of digital and social media platforms on communication and information dissemination.
  • Identify key challenges in the digital age, such as misinformation, algorithmic bias, and the influence of social media on public opinion.
  • Apply strategies for teaching media and information literacy skills that empower students to critically evaluate digital content and sources.
  • Integrate tools and techniques for promoting responsible digital citizenship and fostering ethical engagement in online spaces.
  • Develop assignment ideas and classroom activities that enhance students’ ability to navigate, interpret, and create media in the digital era.
